In a bid to reduce traffic congestion along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) in Bengaluru, which is one of the areas housing most number of IT companies in the city, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to Wipro Founder-Chairman Azim Premji asking him to allow limited vehicular movement through the company’s campus.

The CM argued that if allowed to use the Wipro campus route, it would reduce the congestion on adjoining stretches at the Iblur junction of the ORR by nearly 30%.

CM cities experts, urges for ‘peak hour’ relief

In his letter, the Chief Minister highlighted that one of the biggest challenges for the city along the ORR corridor is the severe traffic chaos at Iblur junction. He said it adversely “impacts mobility, productivity, and the quality of urban life.”

“I extend my warm greetings to you and sincerely appreciate Wipro‘s continued contribution to the progress of Karnataka’s IT ecosystem and overall socio-economic development,” he said in the letter.

“One of the key challenges currently facing Bengaluru, particularly along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) corridor at Iblur junction is severe traffic congestion during peak hours, which adversely impacts mobility, productivity, and the quality of urban life,” the CM added.

Siddaramaiah went on to say that he wants to “explore the possibility of allowing limited vehicular movement through the Wipro campus, subject to mutually agreed terms and necessary security considerations.”

He said that preliminary assessments by traffic and urban mobility experts indicate that such a measure could reduce congestion on adjoining stretches of the ORR by nearly 30%, particularly during peak office hours.

Siddaramaiah’s ‘liveable Bengaluru’ request

The Chief Minister said that Wipro’s support in allowing some vehicular movement will go a long way in “easing traffic bottlenecks, enhancing commuter experience, and contributing to a more efficient and livable Bengaluru.”

“I would greatly appreciate it if your team could engage with our officials to work out a mutually acceptable plan at the earliest,” he said.

Notably, Electronic City, Whitefield, and the Outer Ring Road (ORR) corridor are three areas housing the most number of IT companies in the city. With a huge number of people coming to these areas regularly, the city witnesses heavy traffic which sometimes stretches into hours. Many big companies like Wipro, have their own large area that allows only their employees to use the pass.

The Karnataka CM has now urged Wipro chief to let others use this passage for some time during peak hours.
