The Narendra Modi Cabinet approved the ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’ on Thursday. Under the scheme, rooftop solar panels in one crore households with a total outlay of Rs 75,021 crores.

The scheme was announced on February 13, 2024, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi which aims to encourage people to install solar panels on their rooftops. 

The scheme offers a central financial assistance: 30,000 subsidy for 1 kW systems, 60,000 for 2 kW, and 78,000 for 3 kW or higher.

Households can apply for the subsidy via the national portal and choose a suitable vendor for rooftop solar installation.

Households can access collateral-free low-interest loans, currently around 7%, for installation. Additionally, Model Solar Villages will be developed in each district as role models for rural adoption.

Prime Minister Modi earlier emphasized a range of support measures, from direct subsidies to people’s bank accounts to heavily concessional bank loans, ensuring no cost burden on citizens.

He further added that all stakeholders will be integrated into a National Online Portal, enhancing convenience for everyone involved.

Modi emphasized incentivizing urban local bodies and panchayats to promote rooftop solar systems within their jurisdictions to popularize the scheme at grassroots level.

The scheme will also lead to more income and lesser power bills along with employment generation for people, PM Modi added.

2) Click on “Apply for Rooftop Solar”

3) Register with your State, Electricity Distribution Company, Electricity Consumer Number, Mobile Number, and Email.

4) Log in with your mobile number.

5) Apply for the Rooftop scheme and provide bank details during the application process.

6) Upon feasibility approval, install the solar plant using registered vendors in your DISCOM.

7) After installation, submit plant details and apply for a net meter.

8) Receive a commissioning certificate from the portal after net meter installation and DISCOM inspection.
