Call centre executives which were hired by the Aam Aadmi Party to inform citizens about voter deletion are being harassed, the ruling party of Delhi has alleged. Senior AAP leaders Raghav Chadha and Atishi on Tuesday met Delhi Police officials and registered their protest, reported news agency PTI.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha polls scheduled to begin on April 11, the Election Commission had directed the Delhi Police to take “necessary action” against people making “misleading” phone calls about the city’s electoral rolls, post which an FIR was filed.

A BJP team held a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner and alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party was behind such phone calls.

The AAP leaders, on the other hand, have alleged that the police has been harassing their call centre employees in this regard leading Atishi and Chadha to meet with Delhi Police officials to register their protest.

A senior police official told PTI that they are investigating the issue and are quizzing the call centre employees to establish the nature of calls said to have been made by them to voters.

While addressing reporters outside the police headquarters, Chadha said that “the BJP in the past four years has been trying to destroy the AAP”.

Chadha said that the people who fund AAP are being harassed by authorities and are being investigated as they support AAP. The agency which AAP hired for ensuring fair elections is being harassed as well. “This is because BJP is scared about it,” Chadha said.

AAP leader Atishi also hit out at Delhi Police and the BJP in a series of tweets. “BJP got more than 30 lakh votes deleted in Delhi and when Aam Aadmi Party started talking about this issue in the media the Election Commission removed this list from their website!” she wrote in one tweet.

Atishi said that it was the initiative of the AAP so that people know that their names were being wrongfully deleted from the voter list.

“Aam Aadmi Party went door-to-door to check this list and found wrongful voter deletions on a very large scale. We then hired a call centre to inform voters about their names being deleted from voter list,” she added.

Asserting that the voter deletion is a BJP strategy for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Atishi pointed out that a similar case happened in Telangana too.

She posted on twitter, “Voter deletion is a strategy that is used by the BJP in elections! This is exactly what happened in Telangana, where it was brought to light by badminton player Jwala Gutta, whose name was wrongfully deleted from voter list.”

Atishi went onto to say that the BJP is worried over its strategy being exposed and is using Delhi Police to harass the call centre executives hired by Aam Aadmi Party.

“They (cell centre employees hired by AAP) are being called everyday to the Crime Branch for questioning. They are now being taken for questioning to police headquarters,” she alleged.

She has also questioned that when her party is openly admitting that they have hired the call centres to keep voters informed, then why are the call centres are being called for questioning.

Taking potshots at the ruling party at the Centre, Atishi said that BJP is scared of working with the opposition parties and BJP also knows that they are going to lose the 2019 general elections.

“If BJP and Delhi Police think that anything illegal has been done, then why don’t they question Aam Aadmi Party?, she asks in the tweet.

Another senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh too has asked the Delhi Police to take strict action against the police officials who were “harassing” the call centre employees.
