A Delhi court on Wednesday convicted Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Prakash Jarwal and his close associates in connection with an abetment of suicide case of a Delhi-based doctor in 2020, reports The Indian Express. With the conviction, the MLA, representing the Deoli constituency, faces disqualification from the Delhi Assembly.
Special Judge M K Nagpal’s court in Rouse Avenue pronounced the verdict.
Dr Rajender Singh (52) had died by suicide at his residence in South Delhi’s Neb Sarai on April 18, 2020. The police had allegedly found a purported suicide note at the spot alleging that Jarwal and his aides were “harassing” the doctor and his family over his water supply business.
According to police, the note allegedly said the doctor had held them responsible for his death.
In 2021, Additional Sessions Judge Geetanjali Goel levied charges against Jarwal and his accomplice Kapil Nagar under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 306 (abetment of suicide), 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 386 (extortion by threat of death or grievous harm), 384 (extortion), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intention).
Harish, another accused in the case was discharged for the offence under Sections 306 and 386 IPC but is liable to be charged prima facie for the offence under section 506 IPC, according to IE.
