Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and the party’s former chief Rahul Gandhi remembered former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 106th birth anniversary.
In a post on X in Hindi, Rahul Gandhi shared a picture from his childhood with Gandhi, his grandmother, and wrote, “The values of dedication taught by her to the country and the people are the strength behind every step and the strength of my thinking.”
Paying tribute to his predecessor, PM Modi wrote on X, “On her birth anniversary, tributes to Smt. Indira Gandhi, India’s former Prime Minister.”
Rahul Gandhi, along with Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress general secretary KC Venugopal visited Shakti Sthal in New Delhi to pay their respects to the former PM, who is known as the ‘Iron Lady of India’.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also poured his tributes on her birth anniversary.
“In preserving the unity and integrity of India and making our country strong and progressive, she consistently displayed skilful leadership, true loyalty and strong willpower for India and sacrificed everything for the country,” he wrote.
Senior Congress leader and party general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh called Indira Gandhi “most courageous, compelling and consequential leader” and in his tribute detailed her work as the prime minister.
Born on 19 November, 1917, Indira Gandhi served as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and then again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984.
The country’s first and the only female prime minister till date, Gandhi emerged as a central figure in Indian politics. The daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of independent India, Indira was succeded in the country’s highest office by her son Rajiv Gandhi.
Her combined tenure of 15 years and 350 days made her the second-longest-serving PM after her father.
