The Rashtriya Janata Dal suffered a crushing defeat in the recently concluded Bihar Assembly elections — conceding 50 constituencies as the NDA stormed to a 202-seat majority. Party leaders have since levelled vote tampering allegations and insisted that the mandate did not reflect on-ground sentiments. Senior RJD leader Jagdanand Singh claimed that 25,000 votes were already stored in each EVM, while others broached the possibility of a court case “after collecting evidence”.

“Did you expect the RJD to be in such a state? But these measures were taken to change the situation. This is the country’s misfortune. Where is the country heading? Is democracy a business? People cheat in business. Democracy is a constitutional process. When the Constitution itself is being cheated, will the country survive?” LiveHindustan quoted former RJD state president Jagdanand Singh as saying.

Multiple leaders including Singh also issued calls for voting to be held using ballot papers. The Rashtriya Janata Dal held a meeting on Monday to evaluate its poor performance in the recent Bihar Assembly elections. The Mahagathbandhan was relegated to the Oppisition benches with merely 35 seats — including 25 won the by RJD. The number is a far cry from the 75 seats won by the party during the previous election.

“The mandate of the Bihar polls did not resonate with the situation on the ground. Despite the anger of the people towards the government, they have got such a mandate. People and politicians are not able to digest this,” added RJD spokesperson Shakti Singh.

“We won the election because of the ballot papers, but lost because of the EVMs,” reiterated Maner MLA Bhai Virendra.
