Maharashtra is witnessing a silent surge in Zika infections. Latest reports say that the seventh case of Zika virus was reported in Maharashtra. The latest Zika infection, which was reported over the weekend, is the first Zika virus case in Pune. This has led the districts to increase surveillance as asked by the health department. The health department has also warned of an increase in cases in neighbouring Karnataka.

An essential instruction involves monitoring all expectant mothers within a 5km perimeter and continuing to follow up post-delivery.

The case that caused high alerts was of a 64-year-old woman who was experiencing symptoms such as body ache, fever, rashes and joint pain on November 5. Her diagnosis report came positive with zika virus on November 9. The close contacts of the last have shown no symptoms and the lady has also recovered.

Media reports quoting Dr Pratapsingh Sarnikar, joint director of health, said that in Maharashtra there have been 10 confirmed Zika cases in the past three years. There has been no major spread or complications. Dr Pratapsingh also says that the death rate due to the infection is very low.

However, there has been increased surveillance for pregnant women as Zika virus possesses potential congenital zika syndrome risks.

In the state, this year seven cases of Zika have been reported. In July 2021 one case was reported in Purandar block of Pune district and another two cases were reported in 2022 from Palghar and Bavdhan in Haveli block of Pune district.

Earlier this month, Bengaluru was on alert after Zika virus cases were reported. The detection of Zika virus triggered health alert in Talkaebetta area after positive sample identification and cautionary measures were taken.

Zika virus is a vector-borne disease which is transmitted by the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. The symptoms of this fever is similar to dengue and is largely spread through mosquito bites.

Pregnant women are likely at the risk of miscarriage if they contract Zika infection and hence the precautionary measures are mainly advised and taken for them. Public health department experts say that there is no specific treatment. However, plenty of fluids and rest are advised to help relieve the symptoms and prevent dehydration.
