The stage is set for the unravelling of the biggest political battle of 2024 with the Election Commission of India set to announce the schedule of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 any day now. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi makes a bid for a third consecutive term for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance, the general elections will test the resolve of the Congress-led INDIA bloc of Opposition parties as it sets out to end the ruling party’s winning streak.
The Lok Sabha elections are held every five years to elect a new government at the Centre through voting in 543 parliamentary constituencies across the country. The last two elections –in 20214 and 2019 — saw the BJP-led NDA emerge as the winners against a fragmented Opposition that continued to lose ground. The coming elections, however, will put the BJP to the test against a united Opposition. The Lok Sabha elections, slated for April-May this year, will be held alongside Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim.
