The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is working on the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP), which connects Marine Drive with Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL), to ensure smooth traffic flow.
As part of this initiative, a 550-meter-long underpass is being built at Worli’s J K Kapur Chowk, offering direct access to the MCRP and BWSL for motorists coming from the Prabhadevi area, The Indian Express reported.
Dharmveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated a portion of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) on March 11 in the presence of Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar. The portion is officially called the Dharmveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road.
Underpass at Worli
The underpass will span a width of 11 meters. The entry to it will be situated near the JK Kapur Chowk in Worli. This will be a few metres away from the proposed Worli-Sewri connector. The exit points of the underpass will be near the vehicular interchange at Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk near the Sea Face.
The exit points will link up with the two branches of the Worli interchange. One branch will provide motorists access to the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL), while the other will direct motorists to the main southbound lane of the MCRP, allowing them to head towards Nariman Point.
Progress report and cost
The expense of the tunnel is included within the Rs 13,893 crore allocated for the coastal road project. Construction is currently in progress utilising the Austrian-Tunnelling method, with the civic authorities aiming to complete the project by October.
