The Uttar Pradesh government is leading the charge in sustainable transportation by announcing the rollout of a fleet of electric buses, including innovative double-decker models, aimed at enhancing commuting experiences while significantly reducing pollution levels across the state.
The introduction of double-decker buses capable of accommodating up to 65 passengers will kickstart in the capital city of Lucknow during the forthcoming Navratri festival.
State Transport Minister Daya Shankar Singh said, “We are all set to launch double-decker buses in Lucknow during Navratri. Having recently concluded the tendering process for approximately 100 buses, which includes these spacious double-decker variants, our commitment remains unwavering. Following the initial deployment of 100 buses, we plan to introduce additional buses in due course.” These exciting double-decker buses will initially traverse the streets of Lucknow during Navratri, subsequently expanding operations to key districts across Uttar Pradesh.
In discussions regarding ticket pricing, Singh emphasised ongoing efforts to ensure affordability, making public transportation accessible to a wider demographic. Looking ahead plans for intercity electric buses are in progress with an eye towards their utilisation during the upcoming Kumbh Mela next year.
Singh underscored the government’s projected timeline, aiming to finalize all operations by December, ensuring timely availability of electric buses, including the esteemed double-decker models, before the commencement of Kumbh Mela on January 12 next year. Procurement details are being streamlined through the issuance of tenders, enabling the selection of the most competitive offers for the acquisition of these innovative buses.
The novel concept of double-decker buses in Lucknow was born out of a desire to offer enriching sightseeing experiences for visitors. Tourists can look forward to purchasing a single ticket for exploring notable city attractions such as Bhool Bhulaiya, Residency, and the Zoo while revelling in panoramic views from the upper deck of these eco-friendly buses.
A significant benefit of these electric buses lies in their capacity to curb pollution levels, ultimately fostering a cleaner and healthier environment for residents. Singh reiterated ongoing efforts to establish a robust charging network, with plans to institute charging facilities at approximately 2,000 locations, including petrol pumps, bus stands, and depots, effectively enhancing the operational efficiency of the electric bus fleet.
A spokesperson from the UP State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) affirmed the advantages of electric buses over traditional diesel-operated counterparts, citing reduced emissions, lower operating expenses, and a more serene and comfortable travel experience for passengers. With a current fleet of 11,500 buses and an extensive operational reach spanning over 123.35 crore km, catering to the diverse travel needs of more than 43.29 crore individuals annually, UP’s public transport system underscores its pivotal role in advancing sustainable and eco-conscious transit options for the state.
The unveiling of electric buses represents a significant stride towards a greener future for Uttar Pradesh, embodying the state’s commitment to environmental stewardship and fostering a more sustainable transportation landscape for its citizens.
