Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari delivered a stern message to agencies and contractors regarding the poor condition of roads during an event on Tuesday (September 17). Gadkari emphasised that while efficient operators would be rewarded, those failing to meet standards would be “driven out of the system.”

“We will not spare you. We’ll ensure that bank guarantees of those doing bad work are forfeited and after this, we will blacklist you, not allow you to apply for new tenders,” Gadkari said.

His remarks followed his observation of the neglected maintenance of the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, which he used to reach Ghaziabad for the inauguration of a tree plantation initiative, ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,’ part of the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 – Swabhav Swachhata – Sanskar Swachhata’ campaign.

In his address, Gadkari highlighted the development achievements of the government, the Ministry, and the National Highway Authority of India, referencing data and future plans for the sector. He also underscored the importance of pro-environment policies, mentioning ongoing studies for implementing initiatives like biofuel to combat pollution.

Gadkari criticises condition of Eastern Peripheral Expressway

However, Gadkari did not hold back his criticism of the Eastern Peripheral Expressway’s upkeep, stating, “I have used the Eastern Peripheral Expressway after a long time. A lot of work has been done. Now I wish that a lot of people who don’t work retire, some contractors get blacklisted and bank guarantees of some are forfeited.”

“The office bearers of associations are sitting here (in the audience at the event), the roads should be well-maintained. I saw the road today, it’s very poorly maintained. We will not spare you. We’ll ensure that bank guarantees of those doing bad work are forfeited and after this, we will blacklist you, not allow you to apply for new tenders,” Gadkari warned.

On the other hand, Gadkari mentioned that the government will grant special recognition to agencies and operators that maintain roads effectively.

“Those who do good will be awarded while those who do bad will be driven out of the system,” the minister added.
