Amid the ongoing preparations for the upcoming Ganeshotsava festival, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked devotees not to gather on 12 bridges in Mumbai while taking out processions.
The 12 bridges are situated in between Dadar and Churchgate and CSMT in south Mumbai. This marks the fifth time that the BMC has asked people to avoid overcrowding them.
Until last year, the civic authorities listed 13 bridges. This year, one of the bridges in Ghatkopar has been taken out of service for repairs.
Mumbai: Bridges to avoid
- Currey Road
- Arthur Road
- Chinchpokli
- Byculla
- Sandhurst Road
- Marine Lines
- Falkland
- Kennedy
- French
- Mahalaxmi
- Prabhadevi
- Dadar
A BMC official told The Indian Express that these bridges are not in a “dilapidated state”. “However, during the festival, people carry idols on trucks which is also accompanied by a procession of devotees. During such situation, the weight on these bridges becomes very heavy,” they added.
Most of these bridges are a century old, hence devotees have been requested not to overcrowd them. There needs to be a maximum limit of 16 tonnes on these bridges, they added.
