The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has greenlit a significant development initiative in Manipur, approving 50 National Highway projects spanning a total length of 1,026 kilometres. Among these, 44 projects, covering 902 kilometres, are focused on the hilly regions of the state, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in challenging terrains.

As part of this initiative, eight projects, totalling 125 kilometres, have already been completed in the hills. Currently, 36 projects are underway, with a substantial budget of Rs 12,000 crore allocated for the remaining 777 kilometres. These developments are expected to enhance connectivity and accessibility, fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for residents in these regions.

For the upcoming Annual Plan of 2024-25, the Ministry has earmarked two additional National Highway projects worth Rs 1,350 crore, specifically targeting a length of 90 kilometres in hilly areas. This continued investment demonstrates a sustained focus on infrastructure development in Manipur.

 State road improvements

In tandem with these highway projects, the Ministry is also addressing state road improvements. Under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), a list of prioritised works submitted by the state government has been approved. Out of 111 proposed works, 57 have received the green light based on their priority, reflecting the Ministry’s responsiveness to state needs.

Notably, the Balance of Supply (BoS) ratio for the approved works has risen to 9.81, exceeding the permissible ratio of four for hilly states. This adjustment underscores the Ministry’s commitment to balancing infrastructure needs while adhering to regulatory frameworks, ensuring that the development efforts align with sustainable practices.

Overall, these initiatives signify a proactive approach by the Ministry to enhance road infrastructure in Manipur, particularly in its hilly regions, paving the way for improved economic opportunities and better connectivity for the local populace.
