Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday (November 27) announced that the tender for the highly anticipated 38-km elevated corridor in Kaziranga National Park is expected to be issued within the next 4-5 months.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat during the 12th International Tourism Mart (ITM), Sarma revealed that the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has nearly completed all preliminary work for the project.
“I think in the next 4-5 months, the tender will be issued. Alignment has been sanctioned and I think it will now go to (Union) cabinet for final approval,” the Chief Minister said, adding that the tender issuance would take place in the coming months.
38-Km elevated corridor in Kaziranga
In November 2022, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari approved the construction of a four-lane, 38-km long elevated corridor on NH-715 through Kaziranga National Park, with an estimated cost of Rs 6,000 crore.
Sarma emphasised the importance of the elevated corridor, noting that during the monsoon floods, wildlife—particularly the endangered one-horned rhinos—frequently migrated across the highway, often resulting in fatal accidents.
The proposed elevated road, which will include tunnels in certain sections, aims to provide a safe passage for wildlife, especially during the flooding of the Brahmaputra River.
“This project is crucial for wildlife conservation,” Sarma said, highlighting the frequent loss of animal life when they attempt to cross the highway during the monsoon season.
The corridor is expected to address this issue, ensuring safer crossings for animals between Kaziranga National Park and Karbi Anglong district.
Project garnered significant attention over years
The elevated corridor project has been a long-standing priority for the Assam government. Since taking office in 2021, Chief Minister Sarma has raised the issue with the central government, emphasizing the need for a safer passage for animals.
Every year, numerous animals are killed by speeding vehicles while attempting to cross NH-715, underscoring the urgency of the project.
