The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced a significant milestone in its Green Highways Policy, with over 402.28 lakh plants successfully planted along National Highways. This initiative, launched under the Green Highways Policy (Plantation, Transplantation, Beautification & Maintenance), 2015, aims to enhance the ecological balance and provide numerous environmental and social benefits.

Key Objectives Achieved

The Green Highways Policy was designed to address several critical environmental and infrastructural issues. It sought to evolve a comprehensive framework for plantation along National Highways, aiming to reduce air pollution, provide shade, and mitigate noise pollution. The policy also aimed to prevent soil erosion, reduce headlight glare, and moderate wind and radiation effects. Importantly, it was also intended to create employment opportunities for local communities.

Successful Implementation and Monitoring

To date, plantations have been conducted by various entities including Self Help Groups (SHGs), private agencies, state forest departments, and contractors. The efforts are monitored by a dedicated Plantation Cell established within MoRTH, which oversees the implementation and maintenance of the Green Highways Policy through regional offices of NHAI, NHIDCL, and other associated agencies.

Expanding the Green Cover

The ministry highlighted that the ongoing plantation efforts have not only enhanced the green cover along National Highways but also contributed to significant improvements in local environmental conditions. The policy has seen successful collaboration between governmental and non-governmental entities, emphasizing its role in fostering community involvement and ecological sustainability.

Looking Ahead

While the Green Highways Policy has achieved remarkable progress, the MoRTH remains committed to expanding these efforts. Future plans include further increasing the number of plants and enhancing maintenance protocols to ensure the long-term success and benefits of the initiative.
