In an attempt to increase the carrying capacity of Pune roads and reduce travel time on crucial ones, the traffic control branch has launched a new project, The Indian express reported.
Under this project, the PMC and the traffic police have been putting the roads in the city under different categories since August 16 based on how much they are in use. Once all the roads have been categorised successfully, the traffic police and other stakeholders will take steps to combat congestion and cut down travel time.
Traffic isolation techniques
As per a press release by additional commissioner of police Manoj Patil, the police will aim to reduce traffic jams on 32 major roads in Pune using traffic isolation techniques and parking management.
Between August 15 and 21, police launched a major crackdown on traffic violations and other illegal activities across these 32 roads. During this period, enforcement actions were taken against 2,412 tempo vehicles, 607 cranes, 123 heavy vehicles, and 92 other vehicles found driving on footpaths. Additionally, 299 vehicles were cited for driving on the wrong side of the road, 31 for making illegal turns, and 1,032 for running traffic signals.
The traffic police also targeted 251 hawkers, issued notices to 156 private establishments, and filed a complaint against one establishment for allegedly obstructing traffic on these roads.
Between August 1 and August 22, the traffic police conducted a special enforcement drive. During this period, action was taken against four minor boys for driving various vehicles and 636 individuals for rash driving. Additionally, 203 people were cited for drunk driving, and 1,304 were penalized for using fancy number plates. The police also fined 2,212 two-wheelers for carrying three passengers.
