Commuter woes escalated across Mumbai on Saturday as a mega block led to hundreds of train cancellations. Both Central and Western Railways have announced curbs to carry out engineering and maintenance work in key locations. Over 300-350 local trains on the Western Railway‘s (WR) network have been cancelled including AC local trains as well on the suburban route. According to a press release issued by Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek, these trains will remain cancelled between December 26 and 29 due to a major block work between Kandivli and Borivli.

The 30-day major block was announced by Western Railway. Officials said that on December 27, a total number of 296 trains will remain cancelled and on December 28, 235 trains will remain cancelled.

“A major block of 30 days in connection with the construction of the sixth railway line between Kandivali and Borivali. The block began on the night of 20/21 December 2025 and will continue until 18 January 2026”, officials said, quoted Midday.

Why are services blocked?

The CPRO of WR said that a major non-interlocking block will be carried out for the commissioning of the Electronic Interlocking (EI) panel at Borivali. He informed that this block will be in place on the UP and DOWN fast lines from 1 am to 7 am on 27/28 December 2025.

Therefore, during this period, some UP Mail and Express trains will skip their halt at Borivali station. Platforms 8 and 9 station premises will also remain closed at Borivali station for passengers.

Central line services also impacted

Central Railway line also announced services impact on Friday, stating that it would also operate a mega block on its suburban railway sections on December 28, 2025 to carry out engineering and maintenance work, officials said. The services on the Main Line and the Harbour Line will be heavily impacted due to the block, the railways said.

According to an official statement, the down fast trains leaving CSMT Mumbai between 10.36 am and 3.10 pm will be diverted to the down slow line at Matunga.

On the Main Line, the up and down fast lines between Matunga and Mulund will remain under block from 11.05 am to 3.45 pm, officials said, quoted Midday.

Will services be hit on New Year’s Day

According to reports, the Western Railway said there will be some cancellations on the suburban local services. Efforts are being made to avoid unusual cancellations on New Year eve, December 31, 2025, keeping in view the celebrations and similarly on January 1 as well.

Meanwhile, the railway authorities have asked passengers to confirm the train schedule before planning anything and cooperate with the Railway Administration during this essential infrastructure work.
