The Western Railway on Wednesday (May 29) cancelled or rescheduled several trains following the derailment of a goods train at Palghar railway station in Maharashtra on May 28. Restoration work has been ongoing for more than 15 hours after the incident, officials said on Wednesday.
Seven wagons of the goods train derailed at Palghar, approximately 100 km from Mumbai, at 5:08 pm on Tuesday, impacting the traffic of Mumbai-bound trains from Gujarat, a railway spokesperson reported earlier.
No casualties were reported. The goods train, comprising 43 wagons carrying iron coils, was traveling to Karambeli in Gujarat from Visakhapatnam. According to railway sources, seven wagons, including the guard’s van at the rear, derailed, with some falling on their sides and iron coils scattered over the tracks.
The derailment caused significant damage to the tracks and overhead equipment due to which the rail traffic on Mumbai-Surat route has been impacted. Consequently, the Western Railway announced the complete or partial cancellation, short-termination, and diversion of several trains.

Meanwhile, Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer of the Western Railway, informed PTI yesterdat that all derailed wagons and the guard’s van have been removed from the site. Thakur mentioned that single-line operations began last night, allowing some trains to operate on the down line between Boisar, Palghar, and Kelve Road stations.
“Restoration work is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed by 2 pm,” he said. Nearly 250 laborers are working at the site, with the support of two hydra cranes, two to three earth excavating machines, a 300-ton crane, and other machinery.
