Mumbai’s inaugural Metro line, spanning from Versova to Ghatkopar, commemorated a decade of service on Saturday (June 8), having completed 11 lakh trips with an impressive 99 percent punctuality record. Launched on June 8, 2014, the Mumbai Metro One, spearheaded by Reliance Infrastructure, marked the city’s foray into metro services, significantly augmenting its transportation landscape, previously reliant on local trains.

“We are extremely happy to reach the milestone of providing a delightful customer experience to 970 million commuters in the last 10 years of our journey. We appreciate the overwhelming affection provided to us by Mumbaikars, who helped us become a lifeline in the Versova- Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor,” the Mumbai Metro One said, PTI reported.

According to commuters, the Metro service has not only halved their travel time but also alleviated the burden on the perpetually crowded local trains in the metropolis, providing an environmentally friendly travel option.

A commuter called for a celebration of 10 years stating that “the service has made travel convenient and easy.”

The 12-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor features 12 stations, spanning from Versova in the western suburbs to Ghatkopar in the eastern suburbs. Prasad Keluskar, sales manager of the Andheri Metro station, remarked, “We don’t feel like it has been ten years. The number of commuters has increased, and the service has just eased the commute of travelers, cutting travel time and rescuing them from city traffic.”

Approximately 4.5 lakh commuters use the Mumbai Metro One on weekdays. The metro operates 418 trips daily, with a frequency of about 3.5 minutes during peak hours and 7 minutes during off-peak hours.
