Local train services on the Harbour line were disrupted on Wednesday due to a technical issue between Panvel and Khandeshwar stations in Navi Mumbai, leaving numerous passengers stranded at stations and on delayed trains.
The problem, identified as a fault in the track circuits between Panvel and Khandeshwar, caused trains to run approximately 30 minutes behind schedule, Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer Swapnil Nila confirmed. Efforts are underway to resolve the issue and restore normalcy.
Commuter Chaos and Overcrowding
The disruption led to swelling crowds at stations along the Harbour line, as trains struggled to keep up with their scheduled timings. Passengers reported packed platforms and increased congestion on board the delayed trains.
The Harbour line is a lifeline for Navi Mumbai, connecting it to south Mumbai and the western suburbs. Around 10 lakh commuters rely on these services daily to travel between CSMT, Panvel, and Goregaon stations.
Efforts to Resolve the Snag
Railway authorities assured passengers that the concerned department is actively working to fix the issue. However, delays persisted, affecting office-goers and students who rely heavily on punctual train services.
Impact on Commuters
Many commuters expressed frustration over the delays, with some calling for better maintenance to avoid such disruptions in the future. The Harbour line’s critical role in connecting Mumbai’s suburbs underscores the urgency of addressing these technical challenges swiftly.
While train services were partially operational, the incident highlighted the need for infrastructural upgrades and proactive maintenance to ensure seamless travel for the millions who depend on Mumbai’s local train network every day. Rail authorities have pledged to resolve the issue promptly and minimise the impact on commuters.
