Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the Vande Bharat Express connecting New Delhi to Kashmir in January 2025. The train, travelling on the iconic Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), will pass over the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge. Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh confirmed the news, emphasizing that the USBRL project, spanning 272 kilometers, is nearing completion. With 255 kilometers already operational, the final 17-kilometer stretch between Katra and Reasi is set to be completed by December.

“This project is a gift to the people of Kashmir, aiming to boost tourism, ease transport, and strengthen local businesses,” Singh stated during his visit to project sites, including the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge.

The Vande Bharat Express will feature 11 AC 3-tier coaches, four AC 2-tier coaches, and one First AC coach, providing an affordable and comfortable journey. Tickets are expected to range between Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,100. The route will also enhance logistics for local produce like fruits and flowers, enabling faster delivery to Delhi markets.

Declared a “National Project” in 2002, the USBRL will fully integrate Kashmir with India’s rail network. The Chenab Rail Bridge, standing 359 meters above the riverbed, is a marvel of engineering, towering 35 meters higher than the Eiffel Tower.

With efforts led by IRCON International Limited and Konkan Railway Corporation, the project reflects India’s engineering prowess and determination. Singh praised the hard work of engineers, workers, and officials, ensuring safety and precision at every step.
