Nilgiri Mountain Railway
In this context, the services offered by Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) deserves special mention. Recently, the national transporter has celebrated 115 years of train services to Tamil Nadu’s Udhagamandalam station (Ooty). The train on this route uses steam locomotives and falls under the administrative jurisdiction of Southern Railway (SR).

About Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR)
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR), is one of the most scenic destinations in the world. The NMR is adorned with vibrant green landscapes and framed by majestic mountains. The journey commences from Mettupalayam and concludes in Ooty. It traverses a route that encompasses favourite hill stations such as Coonoor, Wellington, Love Dale, and Fern Hill.
The NMR achieved UNESCO’s World Heritage Site status in 2005. The construction of the 46-km long metre-gauge single-track railway line was first proposed in 1854. However, due to various factors, the work started in 1891 and was completed in 1908.
List of stations in Nilgiri Mountain Railway
The Mettupalayam to Ooty has nine stations on its route. These are – Mettupalayam, Kallar, Hillgrove, Coonoor, Wellington, Aruvangadu, Ketti, Lovedale and Udagamandalam (Ooty). The entire route has around 208 curves, 250 bridges, 16 tunnels and 15 ROB/RUBs. A total of four pairs of trains ply on route in both the directions.
