Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday (December 4) informed the Lok Sabha that there were 99,809 women employees working in the Indian Railways, including 2,037 loco pilots as of March 31, 2024.

Vaishnaw was responding to a query by BJP MP Dr. Manna Lal Rawat, who asked for details about the number of women employed in the Indian Railways, particularly in train operations. Rawat also inquired about the number of women loco pilots and the gender ratio in comparison to male loco pilots.

“Direct recruitment to various posts in the Indian Railways is done as per the laid down procedure,” Vaishnaw said.

“Irrespective of gender, all the candidates fulfilling the prescribed eligibility criteria are eligible for the recruitment. As on 31.03.2024, 99,809 women employees are working in Indian Railways which includes 2,037 loco pilots,” the Railway Minister added.
