Vande Bharat Sleeper train: The much-awaited Vande Bharat Sleeper train is set to begin its inaugural journey soon, marking a major upgrade in long-distance rail travel in eastern and northeastern India. The new semi-high-speed service will operate between Howrah and Guwahati, offering faster overnight connectivity and a significant boost to regional tourism. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to flag off the Howrah–Guwahati Vande Bharat Sleeper train later this month.

Once operational, the new train is expected to cut travel time between the two cities by nearly three hours. Currently, the Saraighat Express is the fastest service on the 966-km route, taking over 16 hours. With the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper, the journey time is likely to come down to around 14 hours, making it a faster and more comfortable option for long-distance travellers.

Faster overnight travel with semi-high-speed technology

Developed by BEML using ICF technology, the Howrah–Guwahati Vande Bharat Sleeper train has a design speed of 180 kmph and will run six days a week. The service is part of Indian Railways’ push to introduce modern sleeper trains for overnight journeys, especially on routes covering long distances.

On Saturday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that Vande Bharat Sleeper trains will be introduced across all states. The Union minister further said that the Vande Bharat Sleeper train will be introduced for overnight journeys of around 1,500 km.

Focus on passenger comfort, safety and modern amenities

The Railway Minister also said that every aspect of passenger convenience, including comfort and safety, has been taken into account while designing. The train is equipped with CCTV cameras, the Kavach safety system, and other advanced features to enhance onboard security.

The 16-coach train will have a total passenger capacity of 823, including 11 Three-Tier coaches, four Two-Tier coaches, and one First AC coach. Key features include ergonomically designed berths with improved cushioning, automatic doors with vestibules, superior suspension for better ride quality, noise reduction systems, disinfectant technology for sanitation, and an advanced driver cab with modern safety controls.

With its aerodynamic design and upgraded interiors, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to redefine overnight rail travel on the Howrah–Guwahati route.
