Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on the sidelines of the 50th G7 Summit. The highlight of their discussion was the ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, a venture set to revolutionize India’s transportation landscape with an impressive investment target of 5 trillion yen from Japan. The PMO took to platform X and revealed that the conversation of the two leaders focused on boosting crucial areas such as defense and high-speed rail infrastructure, as well as enhancing business-to-business, people-to-people, and government-to-government relationships and trade opportunities.

For those unaware, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is considered an infrastructural marvel which will span across 508 kilometers with 12 stations, eight mountain tunnels, 24 river bridges, and one undersea tunnel. This massive project is set to consume 16 million cubic meters of cement and 1.7 million metric tonnes of steel, serving as a significant boost for the cement and steel industries.

Both PM Modi and Kishida during their meeting, acknowledged the 10th anniversary of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, expressing satisfaction with the progress made. They highlighted ongoing collaborations, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, which marks a significant advancement in India’s mobility infrastructure.

India and Japan are collaborating on several important areas, including the landmark Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project that will usher in the next stage in mobility in India, with targeted 5 trillion yen worth of Japanese investment between 2022 and 2027.

Significant Investments and Collaborations

India and Japan are working together on several key initiatives. Japan plans to invest 5 trillion yen in India from 2022 to 2027, and both nations are working on the India-Japan Industrial Competitiveness Partnership to transform manufacturing cooperation. The meeting allowed the prime ministers to review their ongoing cooperation and set the stage for further discussions at the next India-Japan annual summit.
