Southern Railway is in the process of a makeover under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. As per the statement released by railways, the redevelopment has been taken up to boost passenger facilities and infrastructure of Madurai Junction.

This junction is a pivotal terminus of Madurai and is worldwide famous for its Goddess Meenakshi Amman Temple. The station is widely popular among tourists across India and globally.

Current status of redevelopment plan of Madurai Station:

The station’s East Terminal Segment-1 ground floor slab has been completed. On East Terminal Segment -2 ground floor structure is done by 25%, laying out piles, 25% mezzanine floor structure has been laid over till now.

The portion assigned for ground floor structure of the east side multi-level two-wheeler Parking (MLTP) structure, some pile caps for East side mutli-level car parking (MLCP), and several foundation pillars for the west side multi-level car parking are wrapped up.

Six platform footing for platforms numbers 6 and 7 which come under the section of air concourse are finished. For smooth transportation of parcels, the foot-over bridge is erected, footing work for platform number 6 is also done. Escalator foundation raft work, a chamber for collection, a lift pit which is part of subway construction has also been prepared. A building dedicated to the RPF office has been constructed.

Plans for Madurai Station revamp:

Two Skywalks which will connect the parking facilities from the easter side of the station have been suggested. For hassle-free travel, approach roads have been chalked out. Two terminals will be erected on both sides of the east and west. A subway is also in the pipeline which will bridge Periyar Bus stand with the Madurai station premises.

The Madurai junction operates 96 trains daily and has recorded passenger footfall of above 51,000. On completion of the redevelopment plan, the station will have amenities of world-class level and promises to provide a worth-remembering experience.
