India’s automobile industry closed 2025 on a high, with Maruti Suzuki clocking its highest-ever domestic sales tally for any month.
Sales data released on January 1, showed that the country’s leading automakers benefited from resilient domestic consumption, strong utility vehicle volumes and continued momentum in commercial vehicles and farm equipment, resulting in broad-based growth across passenger vehicles, CVs and tractors.
Hyundai Motor India: Exports and new launches support growth
Hyundai Motor India reported total sales of 58,702 units in December 2025, registering a 6.6% year-on-year growth. Domestic sales stood at 42,416 units, while exports rose sharply to 16,286 units, reflecting a 26.5% increase.
The company said demand for the all-new Hyundai Venue remained strong, with bookings crossing 55,000 units within two months of launch. Hyundai attributed the positive momentum to GST 2.0 reforms and said it ended calendar year 2025 with an optimised dealer inventory position.
Maruti Suzuki hits record domestic sales in December
Maruti Suzuki India sold a total of 217,854 units in December 2025. The company did well in India with sales of 182,165 units, which is the highest it has ever been. The main reason for this growth is the compact and utility vehicle segments of Maruti Suzuki India Limited. These segments really helped Maruti Suzuki India Limited to do well.
The small car segment, which has cars like the Baleno and Swift, did really well with 78,704 cars sold. Then there are the utility vehicles, like the Brezza and Ertiga. They sold 73,818 units. Mini cars sold 14,225 units and Vans sold 11,899 units. Light commercial vehicles sold 3,519 units. The company exported 25,739 units to countries.
They also sold 9,950 units to car companies, like other OEMs. For the full calendar year 2025, Maruti Suzuki reported its highest-ever total sales of 2.35 million units, including record exports of 395,648 units.
M&M sees broad-based strength across SUVs, CVs and tractors
Mahindra & Mahindra sold a total of 86,090 vehicles, which is almost 25% more than what they sold the previous year.
When we look at the sales, in India, Mahindra & Mahindra did well with utility vehicles. They sold 50,946 of these vehicles. In the LCV 2-3.5 tonne category, the volume reached 22,066 units, whereas three-wheelers added 7,538 units. The tractor sales, under the farm equipment business, witnessed sales rising 39% to 31,859 units. Furthermore, domestic tractor sales grew to 30, 210 units, marking a 37% growth. Exports in this category surged to 1,649 units, a rise of 78%.
In trucks and buses (CVs above 3.5 tonnes), Mahindra sold 2,260 vehicles, a 43% year-on-year increase, with SML Mahindra accounting for 1,044 units and Mahindra Trucks & Buses contributing 1,216 units.
Tata Motors’ CV business sustains momentum
Tata Motors said it sold 42,508 vehicles in December 2025. This is an increase of 25% from the same time the year before. If we look at the quarter of the financial year 2026, Tata Motors sold 1,15,577 commercial vehicles. This shows that commercial vehicle sales for Tata Motors went up by 21% compared to the previous year.
In the domestic market, HCV truck sales rose to 12,483 units, while ILMCV trucks recorded 7,959 units. Small commercial vehicles, including cargo and pickup models, contributed 15,448 units. International business remained a bright spot, with CV exports jumping 63% to 2,451 units. The company said demand was supported by GST 2.0 reforms, festive spillover and a rebound in construction and mining activity following the extended monsoon.
