Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday met Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran to review the progress of the Tata Group’s existing projects in the state. Among the other things, Chandrasekaran proposed the development of an ‘AI City’ in Lucknow.
They also discussed plans for expansion and fresh investments across multiple sectors. According to an official statement, the meeting featured wide-ranging deliberations on long-term cooperation in areas such as information technology, electronics, defence manufacturing, energy, renewable energy, EVs, tourism, skill development and the digital economy.
After the meeting, CM Adityanath took to X and posted, “The Tata Group has expressed its active participation and commitment towards making the state a leading center for industrial development and job creation.”
Talks of AI City in Lucknow
During the interaction, Chandrasekaran proposed the development of an ‘AI City’ in the state’s capital. The proposed project is aimed at positioning Uttar Pradesh as a global hub for artificial intelligence by fostering innovation, attracting technology-driven enterprises and strengthening the startup ecosystem.
The AI City is expected to generate thousands of jobs linked to emerging and future technologies, the statement said.
Centre of Excellence in Gorakhpur
The meeting also reviewed progress on the Rs 48-crore Centre of Excellence being established in Gorakhpur. The facility is aimed at providing advanced technical training and employment-oriented opportunities, particularly for youth from eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Chandrasekaran informed the Chief Minister that, under a memorandum of understanding with IIT Kanpur, young professionals would be trained in emerging areas including AI, cyber security, data science, 3D printing, drones and space technology. The initiative is intended to support skill development and create an industry-ready workforce.
Almost 2x increase in employees at TCS
The possibility of setting up a Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Uttar Pradesh was also discussed. In addition, plans to expand Tata Consultancy Services’ operations in Lucknow, Noida and Varanasi came up for review. A proposal to increase the workforce at the Lucknow and Noida TCS units from the current 16,000 to about 30,000 employees was also discussed.
In the electronics manufacturing segment, the Tata Group expressed interest in expanding investments in mobile devices, electronic components and other high-tech products. The meeting also touched upon a potential collaboration with Intel to further strengthen the electronics manufacturing ecosystem in Uttar Pradesh, PTI reported.
Expansion of investments in electric buses, EVs and new vehicle models was also discussed. Chandrasekaran said Tata Motors is scaling up electric vehicle manufacturing in the state and working on new EV platforms, aligning with Uttar Pradesh’s push for clean mobility.
