Continuing its streak, the US Embassy in India issued a fresh warning on Saturday morning (IST). The official notice, once again, addressed to foreign nationals in the United States did not just inspire fear in the hearts of those residing in the country illegally, but also sparked hope for those wishing to leave America.

Right off the bat, the US Embassy first warns international individuals illegally present in the country to leave immediately. However, with the very next statement, it spotlights an “historic opportunity for foreign nationals who wish to leave the United States, including those unlawfully present.”

The statement continues, “Depending on their circumstances, they might receive financial and other assistance from the US government to depart.” Those who wish to “take advantage” of this offer have been re-directed to register through Trump administration’s self-deportation CBP Home App.

Self-deportation using CBP Home App

The US government is especially highlighting the CBP Home App here for self-deportation due to how its incentivisation of voluntary exits of illegal immigrants. US Secretary of Homeland Security described self-deportation as the “best, safest and most cost effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest.”

“DHS is now offering illegal aliens financial travel assistance and a stiped to return to their home country through the CBP Home App. This is the safest option for our law enforcement, aliens and is a 70% savings for US taxpayers,” she added.

If you head over to the official Homeland Security website, you’ll find that these incentives tied to self-deportation include a $1000 stipend, and financial and travel document assistance for those in need. The former will be granted upon confirmation through the CBP Home App that return has been completed.

Meanwhile, the registering for voluntary self-departure from America may render one eligible to receive financial assistance for the same. ” If requested, the U.S. Government will assist in booking tickets and/or with obtaining necessary travel documentation. Aliens requesting assistance will have a timely departure arrangement facilitated for them (estimated departure to be within 21 days of approval),” the website states.

Other incentives include extended period to depart for self-funded travellers, voluntary self-departure may improve future immigration options and deprioritised for detention and removal by ICE.

Who qualifies for the incentives?

The official DHS website highlights two categories: “Non-criminal aliens illegally in the United States who  had an encounter with CBP either at a port of entry or between ports of entry” and “Categorical parolees whose legal presence in the United States has expired or will soon expire.”

Furthermore, aliens following through with this path must be physically presented in the US at the time of submitting their intent to leave the country.

Just days ago, the US Embassy India also sent out a clear message to foreign nationals, who may otherwise have entered the country legally, but overstayed their visa. It alerted those individuals that they risk arrest and heavy fines or incarceration for remaining in the US beyond their authorised period of stay. “In addition, they may be deported and could face a permanent ban on future travel to the United States,” the embassy said on X.
