B1/B2 visa: A 30-year-old man from Hyderabad took to Reddit to share his recent experience of getting his US B1/B2 visa rejected at the Hyderabad Consulate. His detailed post has drawn attention from users who shared insights on possible reasons behind the denial.

According to his post, the applicant had his appointment scheduled for 8:15 am and reached the consulate by 7:30 am. “First they checked the passport, DS160 Form and appointment confirmation then had to move ahead for security where you have to keep all the metal including your gold and hair clips as well in the tray then the line moves ahead to the interview section,” he wrote.

He mentioned that his interview took place at booth number 33.

‘Purpose of visit’ draws scrutiny

Sharing his conversation with the visa officer (VO), the Reddit user wrote:

VO: Passport
Me: Good Morning Sir

VO: Purpose of visit
Me: Visiting US for my niece’s birthday and will be staying at my sister-in-law’s place

VO: Are you travelling alone or with your wife
Me: Travelling alone

VO: Does your wife have a visa
Me: Yes

VO: Has she visited USA before
Me: Yes in 2018 or 19

VO: Why is your wife not travelling with you to visit the niece
Me: Because she has to stay back with my parents as we stay with our parents and they are dependent on us

VO: What is your salary
Me: 10 LPA plus variable

He added that after a brief 10-second pause, the officer informed him that his visa had been rejected.

Reddit users explain possible reasons for rejection

The post quickly gained traction, with several users offering their perspectives on what may have gone wrong.

One user commented, “Your reason for travel was very weak coupled with the fact that your wife wasn’t traveling with you. VO didn’t believe the travel reason was genuine, your salary being on the lower side, they suspected you will misuse the visa.”

Another added, “From a third person standpoint the reason for travel is weak. Your wife is staying back to take care of your parents while you are going to stay in the US with her sister, is legitimately suspicious.”
