Indore’s metro project:Commercial operations of Indore’s metro rail could begin as early as the start of 2025, with preparations for its launch now in full swing, officials said Wednesday.
A representative from the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (MPMRC) confirmed that the metro will initially operate on a 5.9-kilometre stretch, from Gandhi Nagar station to station number three on the Super Corridor, where a trial run took place in September 2023. This stretch has been designated the “super priority corridor.”
“We are trying to start commercial operation of the metro rail on this 5.9 km route at the beginning of the new year,” the MPMRC official said. “For this, our different tests are underway on the route,” he said.
Once these tests are completed, MPMRC will submit a report to the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), who will inspect the route and approve the launch. The commercial operation can begin only after receiving clearance from CMRS.
The official added that while stations in the city have been designed to accommodate six-coach trains, the initial service will run with three coaches. If passenger demand increases, additional coaches can be added.
Each metro train coach can carry around 300 passengers, with 50 seats available for sitting passengers.
The foundation for the first phase of the Rs 7,500.80 crore metro rail project was laid on September 14, 2019. The project will eventually cover a 31.5-kilometre stretch in Indore.
