PMC warns against illegal tree cutting

Furthermore, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), also issued another advisory for the festival of colors and urged citizens to refrain from cutting trees for the festival. Traditionally, the Holika Dahan ritual involves lighting a wood pyre by devotees to make offerings.

The PMC emphasized that legal action will be taken against anyone found engaging in illegal tree cutting for Holi festivities. PMC has underscored the importance of tree conservation for the environment’s well-being.

Ashok Ghorpade, the head of PMC’s Garden Department, urged vigilant citizens to report any instances of tree cutting. Ghorpade said, “The Holi festival is on March 25, and at many public places citizens cut the trees to light the Holi, but as per the law, it is a punishable crime. The PMC would fine miscreants up to Rs 1 lakh, and cases would be filed on a priority basis.”

To report such incidents, citizens can call the toll-free number 18001030222 or contact the mobile number 9223050607. Additionally, complaints can be lodged via WhatsApp at 9689900002, as outlined in the notice issued by the civic body.
