Integrated trial run for Mumbai’s underground Metro Line 3 Colaba-BKC-SEEPZ Phase 1 has commenced, marking a significant milestone in the project’s progress. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), overseeing the 33.5 km long line, announced the initiation of trials on Tuesday (March 12).

According to a statement by MMRCL, the trial runs encompass various critical systems such as rolling stock (coaches), signal telecommunications, tracks, and traction. These trials are currently underway between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Aarey depot.

“Integrated trial runs for #Metro3 has been commenced. Various systems like rolling stock (coach), signal telecommunications, tracks traction etc., are being validated during the trial runs which is being carried out between #BKC to #Aarey,” the post said.

Commercial operations expected by September

Once the trials are completed and necessary certifications are obtained, the section will be opened for passenger services. However, the trial run, initially slated to start in mid-February, faced delays due to pending work on the shunting neck at Aarey depot and the electrification of overhead traction wires.

The Aarey carshed depot, housing 14 trains with eight coaches each, will be pivotal in conducting the integrated trial run, facilitating communication testing among the systems.

Metro Line 3, popularly known as the Aqua Line, is Mumbai’s first underground metro, traversing through congested areas and passing beneath high-rise buildings and heritage structures. Commercial operations on the line are anticipated to commence in three phases, with Phase 1 expected to be operational by September this year, as per MMRC projections.
