A Kolkata Metro official on Monday (April 8) announced that it has achieved a significant milestones as more than four lakh people have downloaded Kolkata Metro’s mobile app – ‘Metro Ride Kolkata’ – on their smartphones. Developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the app aims to facilitate metro passengers in recharging smart cards and booking QR Code-Based tickets online conveniently. 

“The idea of developing such an App was conceived to enable Metro commuters to recharge their smart cards or book QR Code-Based tickets anytime from anywhere,” a Metro Railway spokesperson Kaushik Mitra said. 

4.4 lakh Android and 1,400 iOS users downloaded app

Launched on March 5, 2022, for Android and later on iOS on March 22, 2024, the app has garnered significant popularity overtime. “Till April 6, around 4.46 lakh android users have downloaded this App from Google Play Store and 1400 iOS users have downloaded this App from Apple Store. These figures signify the acceptability and popularity of this App among the Metro users,” he added.

To raise awareness, promotional films on app usage are displayed on platform televisions of both old North-South and new East-West Metro stations.

Construction begins for underground Victoria Station

Meanwhile, construction work for the underground Victoria station in the Joka-Esplanade Metro Corridor has commenced, Mitra informed. He also disclosed that the Joka –Majerhat stretch of this corridor has now been operational, while the construction work of the Mominpur to Esplanade stretch is underway.
