Kolkata Metro has seen a significant surge in ridership, with over 5.3 crore passengers utilising its services across all lines from May to July 2024. This notable increase reflects a growing preference among commuters for the Metro’s efficient and hassle-free travel options.

4.6 crore passengers take Blue Line

The Blue Line, the most popular corridor, carried more than 4.6 crore passengers during this period. July alone saw approximately 1.7 crore passengers, up from around 1.5 crore in June. The Green Line 2 also recorded substantial passenger numbers, with about 36 lakh passengers traveling over the three months. Specifically, in July, 12.4 lakh passengers used the Howrah Maidan to Esplanade stretch, compared to 11.5 lakh in June.

On the Green Line 1, which runs from Sealdah to Salt Lake Sector V, passenger count reached 34 lakh, with July accounting for 12.7 lakh travelers, up from over 10.5 lakh in June. The Purple and Orange Lines each saw approximately 48,000 and 89,000 passengers respectively during the same period.

Metro revenue exceeds Rs 80 crores

The Metro’s revenue from passenger fares exceeded Rs. 80 crores over these three months. Additionally, there has been a noticeable increase in the use of digital payment methods, with passengers opting for Smart Cards, Tokens, and QR Code-based tickets. This shift not only saves time but also alleviates issues related to carrying cash.
