The Kolkata Metro registered its highest single day passenger earnings in 13 years on September 2. The Metro Rail earned over more than Rs. 1.33 crore from passengers, making it the second highest earnings from passengers in a day after August 1, 2011.
On August 1, 13 years ago, the Metro Rail had earned over Rs 1.47 crore from passenger fares in a single day. The city’s underground Metro service first began operating in 1984 on a section of what is now the Blue Line, gradually expanding over the years.
How many passengers took the metro on September 2?
On September 2, approximately 7.5 lakh passengers traveled across the city’s Metro lines, including the Blue Line (Dakshineswar-New Garia), Green Line-1 (Sector Five-Sealdah), Green Line-2 (Howrah Maidan-Esplanade), Purple Line (Joka-Majerhat), and Orange Line (New Garia-Ruby More). The Blue Line alone saw over 6.3 lakh passengers that day, while Green Line-2 recorded around 56,000 passengers. On Monday, Green Line-1 had approximately 51,500 passengers.
Last month, Kolkata Metro authorities reported a substantial rise in the sale and usage of Metro Smart Cards over the past three months. Between May and July 2024, over one lakh Smart Cards were sold, indicating a growing preference among commuters for digital payments and more streamlined travel experiences.
