Kolkata Metro Railway is set to introduce the Unified Payments Interface (UPI)-based ticketing system in the East-West Metro corridor (Green Line). This system aims to streamline the ticketing process and eliminate the need for exact cash tendering. Metro Railway authorities, in collaboration with State Bank of India and the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), are spearheading the introduction of this digital payment mode.
Trial Run and Future Implementation
The Metro Railway General Manager on Tuesday conducted a successful trial of the new payment mechanism at Sealdah station of the East-West Metro by purchasing a ticket himself. Following the trial’s completion, the UPI-based ticketing system will be rolled out across the entire East-West Metro corridor (Green Line).
Convenient Ticketing Process for Commuters
Commuters will be able to make payments using their smartphones by scanning QR codes displayed at ticket counters. QR code-based paper tickets will be generated upon successful payment, facilitating hassle-free travel for commuters. Smart card recharge facilities will also be available through this digital payment system.
Expansion to Other Metro Corridors
Upon the successful implementation of the ticketing system on the Green Line, it will be extended to other metro corridors, including Dakshineswar-New Garia corridor, Ruby-New Garia corridor, and the Joka-Taratala stretch.
The expansion aims to provide a convenient and efficient ticketing experience across Kolkata’s metro network.
