India is poised to become a global leader in the maritime sector by enhancing port infrastructure, boosting cargo handling capacity, and building a robust shipbuilding and repair ecosystem, according to Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal.
Speaking at the silver jubilee celebrations of Kamarajar Port in Chennai, Sonowal highlighted the nation’s ambitious vision for the maritime industry. “By 2047, India will rank among the top ten maritime nations,” he said. The Minister lauded Kamarajar Port for its role in decongesting the Chennai Port and fostering efficient coal handling, paving the way for future expansion.
Sonowal announced key projects, including the construction of an Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) jetty with a 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) capacity, which will further enhance the port’s operational capabilities. Additionally, a 1 million liters per day (MLD) seawater desalination plant, to be built at a cost of Rs 32 crore, is set to meet the drinking and domestic water needs of both the port and nearby coastal communities.
The Minister also laid the foundation stone for two major initiatives: a capital dredging project and an Integrated Command and Control Centre at Kamarajar Port, with a combined investment of Rs 545 crore. These projects aim to strengthen the port’s efficiency and safety while fostering technological advancements in operations.
Sonowal emphasized the Shipping Ministry’s focus on timely execution and quality in infrastructure projects, which he credited for the accelerated completion of flagship programs. He reiterated the government’s commitment to transforming India’s maritime sector into a global powerhouse.
