Good news for Mumbaikars! The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is upgrading the services of monorail on the Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle route in the country’s financial capital. With the addition of a rake to its fleet, the monorail services will go up to 142 from 118 during weekdays.

Great news for Monorail travellers

The Monorail will run with a headway of just 15 minutes on weekdays, instead of the previous 18 minutes, with a whopping 142 trips available with an increase of 24 services. “We are dedicated to ensuring that you have a seamless journey throughout your day,” MMRDA said in a tweet.

This is the nation’s first monorail system. The first phase of the 8.26-kilometre-long Chembur-Wadala route was commissioned in February 2014 while the  remaining stretch of 11.28-kilometre-long Wadala-Jacob Circle was thrown open to the public in March 2019.

The Chembur-Wadala route has seven stations. These are – Wadala depot, Mysore colony, Bhakti Park, Bharat Petroleum, V.N. Purav Marg, Fertiliser Colony, and Chembur. The Wadala-Jacob Circle route has 11 stations. These are – Chinchpokli, Chembur Naka, Wadala Bridge, Mint Colony, Acharya Atre Nagar, Antop Hill, Wadala, GTB Nagar, Fertilizer Company and Bharat Petroleum. 

Design and Scheduled Speed of Mumbai Monorail

The design speed of Mumbai Monorail is 80 kmph while the scheduled speed is 31 kmph. The operational timing of Monorail is from 05:00 to 24:00 hrs. 

Significance of Monorail service

The Monorail has proven to be an efficient feeder transit system in Mumbai, benefiting commuters and offering safe, air-conditioned, comfortable, and affordable public transport. It carries more than 7000 passengers per hour in each direction. It also has the capacity to carry around 2 lakh commuters daily.
