Good news for the people of Bangladesh! The much-awaited second phase of the Dhaka Metro Rail‘s Line 6 has been inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday. She has also inaugurated the construction work of its Line-5. The second section of the project stretches from Agargaon to Motijheel.
The Dhaka Metro is being operated and maintained by Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL). The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is working as a consultant on the Dhaka Metro project.
About Dhaka Metro’s Line-5
The 20-km-long Dhaka Metro’s Line-5 (Northern route) will stretch from Hemayetpur to Bhatara via Gabtoli, Mirpur-10, Gulshan. It has been targeted to complete the construction work on this line by 2028. It will be built at an estimated cost of Taka 41,239 crore.
About Dhaka Metro’s Agargaon to Motijheel section
The 8.72-km-long Agargaon to Motijheel section of the Dhaka Metro will have six stations on the route. These are – Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Shahbag, Dhaka University, and Bangladesh Secretariat metro stations. The stretch is a part of Uttara-Motijheel Metro corridor. However, as of now, the train will stop at three metro stations – Farmgate, Secretariat and Motijheel stations.
Metro timings on Uttara-Motijheel corridor:-
The DMTCL will begin the commercial operation on the newly built Agargaon to Motijheel section from November 5 (Sunday). Thus, the metros will run on the entire corridor daily from 07:30 hrs to 11:30 hrs. After 11:30 hrs, the train movement between Motijheel and Agargaon station will be stopped. However, the trains will continue to operate between Uttara and Agargaon station till 20:30 hrs.
Dhaka Metro Phase 1 project
The neighbouring country launched its first metro service on December 28, 2022. The 20-km-long MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) Line-6, funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is the first ever Metro Rail system in Bangladesh, which connects Uttara to Motijheel in Dhaka. The line passes through the busy areas of Pallabi and Mirpur.
