The New Delhi Metro station will become a triple interchange facility with the expansion of the Green Line from Inderlok to Indraprastha, according to officials. The 12.37 km long corridor will join the existing 28.78 km Brigadier Hoshiar Singh-Inderlok Green Line corridor.

As per the officials, the New Delhi station will be developed as an interchange facility for three lines – Yellow, Orange (Airport Line) and now the Green Line. This will be a significant connectivity boost for the entire city, as commuters from Bahadurgarh and other parts of west Delhi, such as Nangloi, Rajdhani Park and Udyog Nagar, will now be able to travel directly to the New Delhi railway station, which is adjacent to the New Delhi Metro station.

This will improve access to the New Delhi station and reduce congestion near the station as more people opt to travel by metro rather than by road, they claimed. The future Green Line expansion will be underground, as is the existing future Delhi station.

Currently, Kashmere Gate is the only triple interchange station on Delhi Metro’s network, connecting the Yellow, Red and Violet lines. After Phase 4, three more stations, Lajpat Nagar, Azadpur and New Delhi, will become triple interchange facilities.

Roughly 86 kilometres of new lines are being constructed as part of the Delhi Metro’s Phase 4 expansion. The construction of three lines, Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg (Violet), Majlis Park – Maujpur (Pink) and Aerocity – Tughlakabad (Golden) is under underway, with more than half of the civil work finished on these sections. Two more corridors, Inderlok-Indraprastha and Saket G Block-Lajpat Nagar, were also approved earlier this year.

The DMRC is now processing statutory clearances, such as land taking over from the DDA, CPWD, and PWD, as well as forest clearing obligations, the officials stated. Further planning and tendering for civil works are being completed before moving on to specialised contracts for track laying, electrical systems, signalling, and other technical components.
