The Delhi government has earmarked Rs 500 crore for the Delhi Metro in its 2024-25 Budget, unveiled on Monday, in a bid to bolster public transportation infrastructure. The move comes as Finance Minister Atishi highlighted the exponential growth in ridership, citing a surge from 24 lakh to over 60 lakh daily commuters since 2014.

Presenting a comprehensive budget with a total outlay of Rs 76,000 crore, Atishi emphasised the government’s commitment to providing top-notch public transportation facilities to every Delhiite. Under the stewardship of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, she noted “significant improvements” in the sector.

Delhi Metro’s remarkable expansion

The Delhi Metro, India’s largest and busiest rapid transit system, has witnessed remarkable expansion over the years. From a network spanning 193 kilometers with 143 stations in March 2015, it has now doubled in length to 393 kilometers, serving 288 stations across the capital region.

The metro’s reach has extended to every nook and cranny of the city, including crucial border points like Tikri, Samaypur, Badarpur, and Shiv Vihar.

Established in May 1995, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation operates the metro system, a joint endeavor between the governments of India and Delhi. The infusion of funds signals a concerted effort to further enhance connectivity and cater to the burgeoning transportation needs of the bustling metropolis.

With the allocation set aside for metro expansion, Delhiites can anticipate smoother and more efficient commutes as the capital continues to strengthen its position as a beacon of urban development in the country.
