The extension of the Namma Metro Green Line from Nagasandra to Madavara will commence commercial operations today (November 7), officials confirmed. This 3.14 km stretch, a part of Phase-2 of the city’s metro expansion project, is set to offer enhanced connectivity and bring relief to thousands of commuters in the region.
The extension, which has been under construction for some time, received its statutory clearance after a thorough inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (Southern Circle) on October 3, 2024. Following this clearance, the final test runs were conducted earlier this week.
On November 6, 2024, Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, D K Shivakumar, alongside Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, conducted a ceremonial inspection of the metro line, traveling from Yeshwanthpur Metro Station to Madavara to mark the milestone.
Bengaluru metro’s green line extension route and stations
The newly extended Green Line will connect Nagasandra to Madavara (BIEC), covering a total length of 3.14 km. The extension includes three stations:
- Majunathanagar
- Chikkabidarakallu
- Madavara (BIEC)
This elevated stretch runs along the National Highway and crosses the NICE (Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises) road at two locations, further enhancing connectivity to key parts of the city.
“It is the smallest extension to Phase-1 under Phase-2 of the Project. With completion of this extension, all the extensions to Phase- 1 under Phase-2 of the project are complete,” the BMRCL said in a statement.
Bengaluru metro’s green line extension cost and funding
The entire extension project has been completed at a cost of Rs 1,168 crore, which also includes a land cost of Rs 152 crore. The addition of this stretch brings the total length of Bengaluru’s metro network to 76.95 km and the total number of stations to 69. With this extension, the Green Line will span 33.46 km with 31 stations, making it a crucial part of the city’s metro infrastructure.
“On commissioning of this section, Bengaluru will have 76.95 km of Metro network with 69 stations. North South corridor (Green Line) will become 33.46 km long with 31 stations and East West corridor (Purple Line) is 43.49 km long with 38 stations,” the BMRCL added.
Bengaluru metro’s green line extension expected ridership
With the new Green Line extension in operation, the metro network is expected to benefit an estimated 44,000 additional passengers daily. The extension will particularly serve as a crucial link to the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), a major venue for national and international conferences and exhibitions. This added connectivity will reduce travel time by up to 30% for commuters traveling to and from the BIEC and surrounding areas.
Namma metro changing city’s landscape
With the completion of this line, all the extensions to Phase-1 under the Phase-2 project have now been finalised. The expansion is a critical component of the state government’s goal to improve urban mobility and ease traffic congestion in Bengaluru. The ongoing development of the metro network is also aligned with the city’s broader vision of reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable, efficient public transport.
In the coming months, the opening of other metro sections under Phase-2 will further integrate the city’s public transport system, bringing more commuters on board and making Namma Metro an essential part of daily life for the residents of Bengaluru.
