Increasing localisation levels in aircraft assembly has led National Engineering Industries (NBC) to enter the aerospace and space segments, with a focus on supplying bearings, a crucial component in the manufacturing process.

As part of the strategic move, NBC Bearings’ chief technology officer (CTO), Lokesh Agrawal, informed FE that the bearings manufacturer has established a dedicated business vertical tailored specifically to the aerospace industry to strengthen its presence in the sector.

“The company is investing approximately Rs 50 crore in the first phase of its aerospace endeavors. This investment reflects NBC’s confidence in the promising opportunities within the Indian aerospace manufacturing industry,” Agrawal said.

Agrawal stated that the Indian aerospace manufacturing industry is currently experiencing rapid growth, positioning itself as one of the fastest-growing sectors globally.

“India is garnering the attention of major international players in the aerospace industry. Many of these global giants are either setting up their assembly operations or exploring the possibility of establishing manufacturing facilities in the country.”

“Over the past decade, component exports for aerospace have grown significantly, with a 15-fold increase. This growth is poised to accelerate even further as the requirements of the aerospace industry are now well understood, presenting a substantial opportunity for Indian manufacturers to become integral parts of the global aerospace supply chain.”

Agrawal also highlighted the significant growth area emerging from the aviation industry boom, which is the ‘Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul’ (MRO) sector.

“As airlines expand their fleets, the demand for MRO services is also increasing. Indian manufacturers are gearing up to support this growing MRO demand, providing an opportunity for local businesses to establish themselves as key players in this crucial segment of the aerospace industry,” he said.

“Indian manufacturers are also set to benefit from the global supply chain. The increasing demand for aircraft and components by Indian airlines has led to a surge in component manufacturing for aerospace industry,” he added.

Initially, NBC’s foray into the sector was for producing bearing rings used in satellites. Later the bearings manufacturer acquired Kinex which supplies bearings for the aerospace industry and other sectors.
