Tata Advanced Systems unveiled a new manufacturing facility in Berrechid, Casablanca Region of Morocco, on Tuesday.

In a statement, the company said the new facility will be primarily engaged in the production of the Wheeled Armoured Platform 8×8. 

This is Tata Advanced Systems’ first overseas defence manufacturing facility. The company said this is also the first overseas manufacturing facility by an Indian defence company.

Tata Advanced Systems said that as part of its contract with the Government of Morocco, the company will undertake the production and delivery of the WhAP 8×8. Further, the company added that the initial deliveries will begin in October. 

Sukaran Singh, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Tata Advanced Systems, said, “Today’s Defence factory inauguration near Casablanca in Morocco marks a new chapter in the India–Morocco industrial partnership, and Tata Advanced Systems is proud to be part of this milestone.”

What is Wheeled Armoured Platform 

Wheeled Armoured Platform  (WhAP 8×8) is a modern a modular armoured platform designed for mobility, protection and mission adaptability. It is jointly developed by DRDO and Tata.

The vehicle has options for remote weapon stations, manned or unmanned, amphibious operations, and multiple role-based configurations ranging from mortar carrier to ambulance.

Speaking at the inauguration of the manufacturing plant, India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that this plant is also a bridge between this region and the global market.

“India, with its growing technological and industrial base, has emerged today as a rising hub of innovation and a reliable partner of the Global South. Therefore, this plant will be beneficial for both countries,” he added.
