Industry body Assocham on Thursday sought introduction of a comprehensive tax amnesty scheme under the Customs regime in Budget 2026-27 to allow taxpayers to settle outstanding tax dues and reduce the litigation burden. It wants the government to provide complete waiver of interest and penalty, and partial waiver of the duty in dispute depending on the quantum involved to the importers against all the disputes related to the Customs act.
During a pre-budget meeting with Revenue Secretary Arvind Shrivastava, the industry body said that over 40,000 cases are pending under Customs regime as of 2024, demanding close to $4.5 billion.
