World Heart Day News: Today is the day to learn about your heart as it is World Heart Day. Everyone knows the fact that a heart pumps and circulates blood inside the body but very few know one of the leading causes of deaths in the world is cardiovascular diseases. The World Heart Day is celebrated to remind people to take care of their hearts regularly.

Heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure, among other illnesses that damage the heart or blood vessels, kill more than 20.5 million people annually, according to the World Heart Federation. Here are some more important facts about your heart and World Heart Day.

Every year the world observes International Heart Day on September 29 to create awareness about heart disease and influence people to take a step forward towards a better heart health. The theme for the day is ‘Use Heart, Know Heart’. According to the World Health Federation website ‘Use Heart’ means using the popular means of communication in the internet era, a heart emoji to spread awareness. The emoji is a feeling that doesn’t need to be deciphered and understood by everyone breaking linguistic, geographical barriers.

By ‘Know Heart’ it means learning and better understanding of heart disease and its precautions. The campaign focuses on knowledge and care of heart and transcends two taglines, ‘BECAUSE WE LOVE AND PROTECT ONLY WHAT WE KNOW’ and ‘BECAUSE WHEN WE KNOW MORE, WE CAN TAKE BETTER CARE’.

Here are four important ways that you can know your heart better:

  • Blood Pressure: Heart failure risk can be increased by a common condition known as high blood pressure. Checking your blood pressure numbers can therefore help you determine your risk. As per the general guide, the normal blood pressure ranges between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg, anything below or high can be risky.
  • Heart Rate: It is the speed at which your heart beats, generally, normal heart beat ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute. Understanding your pulse can help you better grasp the force of your blood flow and blood pressure in various body areas. Your heart health can be determined by how quickly or slowly your heart beats. You can ask your doctor for assistance if you are unable to do so.
  • Blood Test: The amounts of sodium, potassium, creatinine, and other substances that are directly linked to your heart health can be determined by a blood report.
  • Cholesterol Level: Bad cholesterol can clog your arteries and raise your chance of having a heart attack. For a healthy heart, it is therefore essential to maintain normal cholesterol levels. You can determine your cholesterol levels with a quick blood test.
