As couples worldwide exchange tokens of affection and celebrate love on Valentine’s Day, we must delve into the darker aspect of this much-celebrated event. While this day is meant to symbolize love and intimacy, it sadly serves as a backdrop for potential exploitation and harm, particularly concerning the use of substances like date rape drugs.
Valentine’s Day, with its emphasis on romantic encounters, amplifies the risks associated with these drugs. Whether at a cozy dinner, a vibrant nightclub, or a private gathering, individuals may let their guard down amidst the euphoria of the occasion, unknowingly exposing themselves to potential harm.
Dr. Suman Mehla, Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Greater Noida told Financial Express.com that ‘date rape’ drugs, also known as predatory drugs, are substances that perpetrators use to incapacitate individuals to facilitate sexual assault.
“These drugs are often surreptitiously added to drinks without the victim’s knowledge, rendering them vulnerable to sexual assault,” Dr. Mehla said.
It is noteworthy that “date rape” doesn’t always happen on a date. An attacker could be someone you just met or someone you’ve known for a while.
How date rape drugs are used?
Date rape drugs typically impair cognitive and motor functions, leading to confusion, dizziness, and loss of consciousness.
“The most commonly used substances include gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), Rohypnol (flunitrazepam), and ketamine. These drugs act on the central nervous system, causing sedation, memory loss, and a state of vulnerability,” Dr. Mehla told Financial Express.com.
The attacker can use date rape drugs or alcohol to overpower you so you do not know what is happening or remember the assault. In certain cases, date rape drugs are put into a drink without you knowing.
“Date-rape drugs are typically introduced into the victim’s drink or food when they are not looking. Perpetrators may choose to use these drugs because of their ability to induce amnesia, making it difficult for the victim to recall the events that occurred during the assault. The term “date-rape” is used because these drugs are often employed in social settings, such as dates or parties,” Dr. Mehla said.
What are some common date rape drugs?
The most common date-rape drugs are:
- GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid): It is also known as easy lay, Georgia home boy, liquid X, liquid ecstasy, liquid E, grievous bodily harm, Gib, G-riffic, scoop, soap, salty water, organic Quaalude, or fantasy. Doctors sometimes prescribe it to treat a sleep disorder called narcolepsy.
- Rohypnol (flunitrazepam): This is a strong benzodiazepine (a class of tranquilizers) also known as Mexican Valium, circles, roofies, la rocha, roche, R2, rope, and forget-me pill. In some countries, doctors sometimes use it as anesthesia before surgery.
- Ketamine: This is a dissociative drug and it is also known as Special K, vitamin K, and cat Valium. Doctors and veterinarians use it as anesthesia. It is being used for treatment-resistant depression under supervision.
- Alcohol: Reportedly, many attackers use one of those three drugs along with alcohol to boost the effect of the medicine.
Is there any long-term impact on the victims?
Victims of drug-facilitated sexual assault may experience a range of physical, psychological, and emotional consequences. According to Dr. Mehla, long-term impacts may include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and difficulties in forming and maintaining relationships.
“Seeking prompt medical and psychological support is crucial for mitigating long-term effects,” she emphasised.
How can one protect themselves from consuming these drugs?
To reduce the risk of falling victim to date-rape drugs, individuals should adopt preventive measures, such as:
- Never leave food or drinks unattended.
- Keep an eye on friends’ drinks and surroundings.
- Choose food and beverages that are served in sealed containers.
- Open packages yourself rather than accepting pre-opened ones.
- Attend social events with trusted friends.
- Exercise caution when it comes to accepting food and drinks from strangers.
Dr. Mehla also highlighted that immediate medical attention is essential if an individual suspects they have been exposed to date-rape drugs.
“Reporting the incident to law enforcement can aid in the investigation and prevention of further assaults. Educational campaigns and community awareness are crucial in preventing drug-facilitated sexual assaults. Establishing clear communication and consent in social interactions can contribute to a safer environment,” she added.
