As the rains arrive, they bring relief from the heat but also increase the risk of infections. From stomach bugs to mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and malaria, the monsoon can affect your health if you’re not careful. So what should you do to keep your health in check during the rainy season? We got in touch with a doctor who shares easy ways to stay healthy this monsoon.

“Monsoon is a happy time, but it also creates the perfect environment for germs to grow. Water collects in many places, drains overflow, and the air becomes humid. This leads to a rise in infections,” says Dr Rishikesh Dessai, Consultant Physician, Sir Gangaram Hospital, Delhi.

Common illnesses during this time include colds, flu, typhoid, hepatitis A, red eyes (conjunctivitis), pneumonia, asthma, malaria, and dengue. Stomach infections and fungal skin problems are also more common.

Hence here are Dr Dessai’s simple health tips to protect yourself:

1. Drink only clean water

“Waterborne diseases are very common during the rains,” says Dr Dessai. Dirty water can lead to typhoid, hepatitis, cholera, and other stomach infections.

He advises drinking boiled or filtered water. Carry your own water bottle when going out. “You can add lemon or honey for taste and a vitamin C boost,” he suggests.

2. Eat fresh, home-cooked food

Street food and cold, leftover meals should be avoided. “They may be contaminated and can cause food poisoning or indigestion,” warns Dr Dessai.

Instead, eat light and freshly prepared meals like dal, khichdi, porridge, or soup. Try steaming or boiling your food. Use natural ingredients like turmeric and tulsi to build immunity.

3. Avoid raw salads and leafy vegetables

“Green leafy vegetables can carry germs and worms during monsoon,” says Dr Dessai. Instead, eat vegetables like bottle gourd, bitter gourd, ash gourd, ridge gourd, and okra. Wash and cook them well.

4. Add fruits, seeds, and nuts to your diet

Eat seasonal fruits like apples, bananas, papaya, pomegranate, and pears. “They’re rich in vitamins and help fight infections,” he explains.

Seeds and nuts—such as almonds, walnuts, and flaxseeds are also good for your health and immunity.

5. Skip seafood during this season

Monsoon is the breeding season for fish. “Avoid seafood, especially if it’s stored or refrigerated. It can cause stomach upsets,” says Dr Dessai. Eat eggs, chicken, or dals as safer protein sources.

6. Limit alcohol intake

“Alcohol slows your body’s metabolism and weakens your immune system,” warns Dr Dessai. Avoid it if possible to stay healthy during the rains.

Eating healthy, drinking safe water, and avoiding risky foods can protect you during the rainy season. “With a few precautions, you can enjoy the monsoon without falling sick,” says Dr Dessai. Stay safe, eat fresh, and enjoy the much-awaited rainy season!
