Technology plays a crucial role in maintaining and improving sustainability across various sectors, like the energy sector, transportation sector, resource management sector, Infrastructure (green buildings) sector, record & data analysis sector and the circular economy sector.

However, advancements in technology can negatively impact nature.  Inderpreet Kaur, senior member, IEEE, says that the rapid technological advancements can result in a high turnover of electronic devices, leading to significant e-waste. This waste can leak harmful substances into the environment which will contaminate ecosystems. It can also pose health risks to humans and wildlife and hence will disturb the life cycle. In conversation with Inderpreet Kaur, senior member, IEEE, , on how new age tech like artificial intelligence (AI) can help to solve the negative impact of technological advancements and come up with new sustainable ideas.

How AI is helping to mitigate rising global issues?

Fossil fuel consumption is one of the major parameters which are responsible for global issues. To reduce carbon footprints due to consumption of conventional energy sources, energy use in various sectors, including transportation, manufacturing, and buildings to be optimized. Smart grid powered by AI can balance supply and demand more effectively by integrating non-conventional energy resources (Like Solar, wind, tidal, MHD etc). Further, by improving logistics, transportation routes, and inventory management, AI helps companies reduce emissions and energy consumption.

Also, to improvise the accuracy of climate models, AI based algorithms can play a crucial role to analyze vast amounts of climate data. These improvised AI based climate models will assist policy makers and environmental advisors to interpret potential impacts and devise mitigation strategies.

Can advancements in technology have the potential to harm nature? How AI is solving such challenges? 

Advancements in manufacturing processes, rise of automation industries, increase of per capita energy consumption lead to greenhouse gas emissions, increased pollution, threatening to biodiversity. To reduce the above mentioned harms Governments should enact and enforce stringent environmental regulations that hold industries accountable for their carbon footprints.

International agreements to address global environmental challenges should be promoted. 

The 3-R concept ( reduce , recycle and reuse) must be taught and implemented at school level, so that every youth and citizen of the nation will be aware to care for the mother earth and to protect it from global issues. Industry-Academia interface needs to be strengthened to develop and implement sustainable technological, energy efficient solutions. Developing of AI based technologies that are specifically aimed at solving environmental challenges and ensuring that their use does not inadvertently harm the environment.

How Artificial Intelligence is changing travel technology?

In my opinion, travel technology has significantly enhanced the convenience, efficiency, and enjoyment of travel while promoting safety and sustainability. Online booking platforms are making it easier for travelers to find and book flights, accommodations, and activities. Mobile applications are just cherry on cake, for providing mobile check-in and digital boarding passes, real-time updates on flight status, weather conditions and travel itineraries to the travelers. The continuous evolution of these travel technologies promises even more personalized, secure, and eco-friendly travel experiences in the future. Undoubtedly, AI plays a commendable role to ease travel. 

AI algorithms analyze user preferences and behaviors to offer personalized travel recommendations, improving the overall travel planning experience. AI-powered chatbots provide 24/7 customer support, helping travelers with inquiries, booking changes, and travel advice. As travel technology advances, it will be essential to address challenges such as data privacy, cyber security, to ensure the safe and secure travel for all travelers.

How AI is helping to maintain and improve sustainability?

In the energy sector, AI powered smart grids will optimize electricity distribution and integration of non-conventional energy sources with conventional energy sources. Improvised energy storage devices will allow better management of renewable energy sources (i.e. non-conventional energy sources). Technological advancements in sensors, drones and hence IOT based applications are helping to optimize water use in agriculture, reducing waste, conserving water resources and improving recycling processes. 

The adoption of EVs in the transportation sector is helping to reduce greenhouse gas emission and hence pollution. Smart building technologies, including automated lighting, heating, and cooling systems, reduce energy consumption in buildings and hence progressing towards smart cities. In conclusion, technology is a powerful enabler of sustainability, providing tools and solutions to reduce environmental impact, conserve resources and promote sustainable practices across various sectors as mentioned above. By leveraging these technologies, we can work towards a more sustainable future, balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship and social well-being.
